the one that typically shows the action or state of being of the subject. Main verbs can stand alone, or they can be used 
with a helping verb, also called an auxiliary verb.
 กฏทางไวยกรณ์มีอยู่ว่า ถ้า Main verb ในประโยค ใช้คำกริยาต่อไปนี้ จะต้องใช้ infinitive(to+verb) ตามเท่านั้น คำกริยาเหล่านั้นได้แก่
agree,  decide, deserve, expect, hope, learn, need, offer, plan, promise, seem, wait และ want 

ตัวอย่างเช่น:

The last thing I want is leaving the USA.  (incorrect)

ประโยคข้างบนนี้ผิดหลักไวกรณ์อังกฤษ จะใช้ Gerund (leaving) ไม่ได้
จะต้องใช้ infinitive (to leave) ดังนี้:

The last thing I want is to leave the USA.

การใช้ Gerunds ก็เช่นเดียวกัน มี Main verbs  or the principal verbs อยู่มากที่จะใช้กับ Infinitives ไม่ได้ จะต้องใช้กับ Gerunds เท่านั้น
ตัวอย่างเช่น Verb ต่อไปนี้:
admit, advise,  avoid,  consider (think about),  mention (say something), recommend, risk, suggest, involve: 

The course involved writing three tests.
She mentioned seeing my brother at a baseball game.
I recommend practicing gerunds and infinitives.
Don’t risk losing your job!
I suggest reading more English short stories.

I suggest you to do it. ประโยคนี้ผิด
 จะต้องใช้ Gerunds
I suggest you doing it.

สำหรับ verb "suggest" อาจจะใช้ได้ในรูปประโยคนี้
I suggest that you do it
I suggest you do it.
I suggest it to you.

อีกตัวอย่างหนึ่ง
1.I suggested him to buy the other one.X 
   I suggested that he buy the other one.
   I suggested he buy the other one.
   I suggested buying the other one.
