ประเด็นเรื่องพลายศรีณรงค์ พลายประตูผา ทางการทูตของ 2 ประเทศหารือกันว่าต้องการให้ไทยส่งแพทย์ไปประจำที่ศรีลังกาเพื่อดูแลช้าง 2 เชือก
คำถามคือ ในศรีลังกามีช้างจำนวน 7000 เชือก แต่สัตวบาลเกี่ยวกับช้างไม่ดีก็ไม่น่าใช่ แต่ปัญหาคือเอาไปแล้วดูแลให้ดีไม่ได้ต่างหาก และที่กลุ่มคนรักช้างและกลุ่มคนทวงคืนช้างไทยมีความเห็นตรงกันคือ
“เราต้องการให้ยุติการทูตด้วยการส่งช้างไปเจริญสัมพันธไมตรี เราต้องการแค่เป็นการทูตโดยใช้คณะทูตร่วมกับการให้ของกำนัลตามโอกาสและความเหมาะสมเท่านั้น ไม่ได้มีเจตนาลบหลู่ หรือหมิ่นเกียรติผู้ใด แต่เราต้องการความเสมอภาคในสิทธิ์ของช้าง 2 เชือกผู้อยู่อาศัยบนโลกนี้เท่านั้น และช้างที่แห่พระเขี้ยวแก้ว ไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็นช้างจากประเทศไทย แต่ยังมีช้างจากที่อื่นที่สามารถทำหน้าที่ได้ดีหรือดีมากกว่าพลาย 2 เชือกที่แก่ชรามาก สมควรได้พักผ่อนเหมือนพวกท่านเช่นกัน เราต้องการขอคืนช้าง 2 เชือกให้กลับมาใช้ชีวิตอย่างเป็นอิสระในบั้นปลายชีวิตที่ประเทศไทยเท่านั้น“
Regarding the issue of Plai Srinarong and Plai Pratu Pha, diplomatic discussions between the two countries have proposed that Thailand send veterinarians to be stationed in Sri Lanka to care for the two elephants.
The question is: Sri Lanka has approximately 7,000 elephants, so it is unlikely that they lack veterinarians or elephant specialists. The real problem, however, is the inability to provide proper care after the elephants were taken there. This is a point on which both elephant welfare groups and the movement calling for the return of Thai elephants share the same view:
“We call for an end to the use of elephants as instruments of diplomacy for fostering bilateral relations. We seek diplomacy conducted through official delegations, accompanied by appropriate and suitable gifts on relevant occasions only. We have no intention of disrespecting or offending anyone.
What we seek is equality in the rights of these two elephants as living beings on this planet. The elephants participating in the Esala Perahera (the procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic) do not have to be elephants from Thailand. There are elephants from other places that can perform this role just as well, or even better, than these two aging bulls. Given their advanced age, they deserve rest, just as people do.
We therefore respectfully request the return of the two elephants to Thailand, so that they may live freely and peacefully during the final stage of their lives.”
