Brussels in Belgium is a city of around 1.5 million people. Like all cities, it is usually full of cars. But for one day in September each year, Brussels is quiet. There are no cars on the roads. This is Cat-Free Day. Nobody is allowed to drive into the city centre. People have to walk or ride bicycles, or catch a bus or train.

On Car-Free Day in 2010 a big crowd of people walked through the streets of Brussels. 4 think it's a great idea,' said one man. "Usually I drive everywhere. But today I have time to look around at my beautiful city.

The first car-free day was in France in 1998. The French government wanted to show people what it would be like without so many cats. It was a very popular idea, and the next year other countries had car-free days too. In 2010, cities in thirty-nine European countries had car-free days. Cars were not allowed in Rome, Athens, Paris and many other cities

Cars cause serious problems, says Margot Lerner, who works for the Belgian government. They cause a lot of unhealthy air pollution. And they are dangerous. Each year many people are killed by cars. So we need to use them less. And we need people to use trains and buses more. Car-free days make people think about these things.

But some people aren't so happy. One day without cars is not enough,' says Sophie Doyen, a student. I'd like to see a car-free year!!
