Singapore’s history began with the British, unlike many countries who had also experience colonialism. There was no civilisation in Singapore, only ingenious inhabitants. I’ll leave you to figure what’s a civilisation. To put it simply, there wasn’t any legal structure, government, and modern economy in Singapore. All there was were a couple of kings who were in fact tribal leaders.
But the British is not the entire reason why Singaporeans speak English. Singaporeans speak English because of Lee Kuan Yew, who decided to abolish all vernacular schools, for example Chinese, Tamil, and Malay schools, and replaced them with a unified English-based education system.
Now, the medium of instruction of ALL schools in Singapore is English. Whether you come from a Chinese family, an Indian family, or a Malay family, you had to learn English. Not as a second language or foreign language, as a native and first language. Schools in Singapore are not like English lessons in Japan or South Korea. NO foreign language is spoken, or allowed to be spoken in formal classroom settings.
This is why people speak English in Singapore.

สิงคโปร์มีวิธีเปลี่ยนประเทศยังไงให้คนสิงคโปร์หันมาพูดภาษาอังกฤษกันได้(เกือบ)ทั้งประเทศ
หรือว่าออกกฎหมายบังคับว่า ใครจะสอบรับราชการจะต้องสอบเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ต้องพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ดี ต้องใช้ภาษาอังกฤษสนทนาในหน่วยราชการ
- ออกกฎบังคับให้ทุกโรงเรียนในสิงคโปร์ต้องจัดการเรียนการสอนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษเท่านั้น
- ออกกฎบังคับให้รายการทีวี /วิทยุ ต้องออกรายการเป็นภาษาอังกฤษเท่านั้น หรือเป็นส่วนใหญ่ (เช่น 70% ต้องออกรายการเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ)
แต่สงสัยอยู่ว่า เด็กที่เกิดและเติบโตมา เวลากลับมาบ้าน ก็ต้องพูดกับพ่อแม่ปู่ยาตายาย อาม่าอากง เป็นภาษาดั้งเดิมของตัวสิครับ
เวลาจะเรียกกินข้าว เวลาคุยสนทนาในครอบครัว เวลาส่วนใหญ่ในครอบครัวก็ต้องกลับไปใช้ภาษาดั้งเดิมของตัวเองอยู่ดี
