ASEAN from my vision

Everyone may have heard the word "ASEAN" several times either via newspaper, T.V. news, or social media. We have obviously seen that the Thai government tries to alert us how important ASEAN is? But most Thai people only know the ten ASEAN member countries, including Thailand, will merge and become a bigger community, but for what purposes? We have to be forward-thinking about this.

First of all, I would like to talk briefly about ASEAN history, which all ASEAN members should know. ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) was officially established on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the five founding members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Then Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia were joined respectively, making up today the ten member countries of ASEAN. An ASEAN community consisting of three pillars, namely ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). The main aims and purposes of the setting up of ASEAN were about cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, technical, educational and other fields, also in the promotion of peace and stability throughout the region. ASEAN community is moving by having the motto, One Vision, One Identity, One Community. Exactly, I would love to see that image.

However, it seems that ASEAN community does not have a direct effect on our daily life yet. Since AEC was already started last year, a single market (free flow of resources) were opened, this is a challenge for politics and government workers, big business operators and skilled labors as Doctor, Nurse, Dentist, Engineer, Architect, Accountant, Surveyor, and Tour guide. Not everyone can freely move, work or even live in ASEAN member countries as people in EU (European Union). In terms of ASCC, we still have a different mind when we are looking at ASEAN members or foreigners from another country and we do not feel they are us. It might because we have never touched their life, we do not know how they are? So we do not dare to communicate with them. Fortunately, I used to have a chance to be an exchange student in Indonesia for one semester. During that period, I had learned more about Indonesians, their culture and lifestyle by studying with them. That really made me feels familiar every time when I meet Indonesians in Thai. Importantly, a tool for connecting people from different countries is English. Not as always, but English is wildly used in the world. Moreover, the working language of ASEAN is also English, so we should be able to use it in this era of global competition. For APSC, I think this pillar is the most difficult. To use international law as EU law which has been using by EU, it needs a long time to succeed because of a different regime. Still, I expected we could have the same political system like EU in the near future and I hope the use of law would be stronger. Otherwise, there is no meaning.

In the end, I would say that ASEAN community is not going to change our life these days. The only people who can change our life are us. So reflect on ourselves and aim for continuous self-development, learn more about neighboring countries' culture, and work on becoming a better version of us individually. Now, these are what we can do for ASEAN.
