They always refer to the giant whale as 'a white or the white whale'. But really, it doesn't look very white to me.
Why is that?

There are certain spots on his back that look white or pinkish. Those spots might be barnacle or scars or some kind of skin defection. He is not entirely white but the white spots are pretty distinguishable, so the whalers call the whale by what they saw most clearly.
How is the whale in "In the Heart of the Sea" white??
Why is that?
