Thailand U23 squad overpower Liaoning VC to capture VTV cup title
Thailand women's U23 team claim title in Vietnam invitational tournament before their departure for the FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship.
Bac Lieu, Vietnam, August 1, 2015 – The Thailand women’s U23 team defeated Liaoning VC of China 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 25-20) in the final of the VTV Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Bac Lieu Gymnasium.
The victory was a fine tune-up for the Thailand team before they leave for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship in Ankara, Turkey, from August 12 to 19, against the world’s 11 best women’s U23 teams. The Thai team gained its first ever title in the VTV Cup since the tournament’s debut in 2004. Last year, the Thai team landed in second place behind hosts Vietnam in a four-set match.
The Thailand U23 team made a big leap en route to the final after finishing fourth in the preliminary round. Thailand lost to Vietnam in the first round 3-1, but later on prevailed over the hosts in the semifinals 3-1.
Thailand fielded in a strong offensive frontline, led by 15-year-old Chatchu-on Moksri, Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Pornpun Guedpard and Hattaya Bamrungsuk, all of whom have recently competed in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix, while Zhang Xiaochen, Li Yuwei and Zhao Yang were Liaoning’s front-runners.
Chatchu-on scored a match-high 18 points including 15 kills from 44 attempts, while Zhang Xiaochen led Liaoning VC with 15 points.
Thailand survived the first set 25-22 as Chatchu-on and Ajcharaporn unleashed strong attacks from both flanks. Liaoning pulled their game together and clinched the second set 26-24. The third set saw both sides exchanging leads but the Thai team fared better and secured the third set 27-25.
Thailand gathered courage to come up with a strong finish at 25-20 and claim their first ever title in the competition.
Meanwhile, April 25 Sport Club of DPR Korea avenged their preliminary round loss to Vietnam by ousting the hosts 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 25-18) to gain third place. The home team ended in fourth position.
