Differences between primary and secondary meristems
1.Primary meristems
1.1 The initial cells divide across their shorter axis.
1.2 The cells have dense cytoplasm with no large vacuoles.
1.3 Found in all higher plants.
1.4 Found at the tips of stems and roots.
2.Secondary meristems
2.1 The fusiform initials divide longitudinally toward their tips.
2.2 The cells have large vacuoles. The vacuoles of the cambium cells may help the cells withstand the pressure of the expanding layers of xylem.
2.3 Found only in many dicotyledonous plants and also in some non-flowering seed plants e.g. pine trees
2.4 Form a layer arranged as an open cylinder within the stem.
