หรือเอ่ยชื่อนักบุญ อาจจะสงสัยว่า
"เอ๊ะ... กราบไหว้รูปเคารพหรือเปล่า?"
หรือ "ทำไมไม่ทูลขอต่อพระเจ้าโดยตรง?"
เพื่อความเข้าใจที่ชัดเจนและเป็นกันเอง
เราอยากชวนมาดูความจริงในคำสอนออร์ธอดอกซ์กันครับ!
เราอธิษฐาน นมัสการ และกราบไหว้ "พระเจ้าผู้เดียว" เท่านั้น
พระเจ้าคือผู้เดียวที่เรากราบไหว้และทูลขอความรอดโดยตรง นักบุญไม่ใช่พระเจ้า ไม่มีอำนาจเนรมิตสิ่งใดด้วยตนเอง และไม่ได้มาแทนที่พระเยซูคริสต์เลย
พระเจ้าทรงเป็น "พระเจ้าของคนเป็น" ไม่ใช่คนตาย
พระเยซูคริสต์ตรัสไว้ว่า “พระองค์ทรงเป็นพระเจ้าของอับราฮัม พระเจ้าของอิสอัค และพระเจ้าของยาโคบ พระเจ้าไม่ได้ทรงเป็นพระเจ้าของคนตาย แต่ทรงเป็นพระเจ้าของคนเป็น”
แม้ท่านอับราฮัม อิสอัค และยาโคบจะล่วงลับไปนานแล้ว แต่จิตวิญญาณของพวกท่านยังมีชีวิตอยู่กับพระเจ้า เหล่านักบุญผู้เชื่อมั่นในพระองค์ก็เช่นกัน พวกท่านไม่ได้ "สูญสิ้น" แต่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่ในพระคริสต์ ณ สวรรค์
การเอ่ยถึงนักบุญ คือการขอให้ "ร่วมอธิษฐานเผื่อเรา"
เหมือนการฝากเพื่อนอธิษฐาน: เวลาเราเจอมรสุมชีวิต
แล้วเราขอให้เพื่อนคริสเตียนหรือศิษยาภิบาลช่วย
"อธิษฐานเผื่อผม/ดิฉันด้วยนะ"
+ การขอให้นักบุญช่วยก็คือสิ่งเดียวกันครับ!
ต่างกันแค่พี่น้องคนนี้เดินนำหน้าเราไปอยู่ในสวรรค์แล้ว
และเพราะความตายไม่สามารถขัดขวางความรักในพระคริสต์ได้
พวกท่านจึงยังคงห่วงใยและร่วมอธิษฐานทูลขอต่อพระเจ้าแทนพวกเรา
+ เป็นแบบอย่างและแรงบันดาลใจ:
เหมือนเวลาเราอ่านพระคัมภีร์ แล้วรู้สึกประทับใจชีวิตของ
ท่านเปโตร ที่แม้เคยหกล้มแต่ก็ลุกขึ้นมารักพระเจ้าด้วยสุดใจ
หรือ ท่านเปาโล ที่ยอมสละทุกอย่างเพื่อข่าวประเสริฐ
แล้วเราเกิดแรงบันดาลใจอยากดำเนินชีวิตตาม
เหล่านักบุญตลอดประวัติศาสตร์ก็คือมนุษย์ธรรมดา
ที่เคยผ่านอุปสรรคและความทุกข์ แต่เอาชนะได้โดยพระคุณพระเจ้า เรื่องราวของพวกท่านจึงเป็น "แบบอย่าง"
ให้เรามีแรงใจในการติดตามพระคริสต์อย่างมั่นคง
คำอธิษฐานของผู้ชอบธรรมมีพลัง
พระคัมภีร์ระบุว่า "คำอธิษฐานของผู้ชอบธรรมมีพลังทำให้เกิดผล" (ยากอบ 5:16)

แต่เราพูดคุยกับท่านด้วยความรักและเคารพ
ในฐานะพี่น้องครอบครัวเดียวกันในพระคริสต์ครับ

Why Do Orthodox Christians Ask Saints to Pray for Them?
When seeing Orthodox Christians standing before an icon or mentioning the names of saints, many people might wonder: "Are they worshiping idols?" or "Why not pray directly to God?" Here is a simple and warm breakdown of what Orthodox teaching actually holds.
We Pray To, Worship, and Adore God Alone
God is the only One we worship, adore, and pray to directly for our salvation. Saints are not gods, they have no power to create miracles on their own, and they never replace Jesus Christ.
God is the "God of the Living," Not the Dead
Jesus clearly stated: "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living." Even though Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob passed away long ago, their souls remain alive with God. Likewise, saints who departed in faith have not vanished—they are fully alive in Christ in heaven.
Asking Saints for Prayers Means Asking Them to "Intercede for Us"
+ Like asking a Christian friend to pray for you: When facing life's storms, we often reach out to a fellow believer or pastor saying, "Please pray for me." Asking a saint for help is the exact same thing! The only difference is that this brother or sister has gone ahead of us into heaven. Because death cannot separate us in Christ, they still care for us and join in praying to God on our behalf.
+ Serving as role models and inspiration: When reading Scripture, we are deeply moved by St. Peter, who stumbled yet rose to love God wholeheartedly, or St. Paul, who gave up everything for the Gospel. They inspire us to follow Christ with equal zeal. Saints throughout Church history were ordinary human beings who faced struggles and temptations but overcame them through God’s grace. Their lives serve as a powerful example and encouragement for us to remain steadfast.
The Prayer of the Righteous Has Great Power
Scripture tells us: "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" (James 5:16). Saints are those who lived lives that brought glory to God until the very end. Having them by our side means having both "heavenly brothers and sisters who intercede for us" and "spiritual role models" to guide our steps.
