7. What evil deeds did the Lord Buddha commit in the past?          Question   According to the life of the Buddha, the Buddha was seriously ill many times, even when he was about topassaway. That means that in the past, the Buddha himself had committed evil deeds that caused him to fall ill, right? Did he show what evil deeds he had done? If he did, please tell me. Answer

Regarding   the Buddha’s past karma, the Buddha himself showed it in the Apadana, in the section on Pubpakampiloti Buddhapadana, section 392, about the 14 past karma he had committed in the past. The 14 are as follows:
          1. We saw a monk who made it a practice to live in the forest and offered old cloth. We wished to become aBuddhatimeBuddhaat that time, the result of the karma of offering old cloth would result in becoming a Buddha. This first past karma is kusala karma.           2. In the past, we were a cowherd who drove cows to graze. We saw a cow drinking muddy water and stopped it. Because of the result of that karma, in this last life, even though we were thirsty, we did not drink the water we wanted.           3. In other lives in the past We were gangsters named Punali, and in some places Munali. We insulted the paccekabuddha Surabhi, who did not harm us in return. As a result of that karma, we wandered in hell for a long time. We suffered terrible pains for many thousands of years. Because of that remaining karma, in our last existence we were insulted because of Sundarika.           4. Because of insulting the elder Nanda , the disciple of the Buddha who conquers all dangers, we wandered in hell for ten thousand years. After becoming a human being, we were insulted many times. Because of that remaining karma, Cincamanawika, with her people, insulted us with untrue words.           5. In the past, we were a brahmin named Sutava, whom the peopleworshipped and taught mantras to 500 young men in a great forest. We saw a fearsome sage who had attained the five psychic powers and had great spiritual powers come to our monastery. So we insulted the sagewho did not harm us. By telling our disciples thattheseare fond ofsensual pleasures, even when we told them, the young men listened. Then all the young men went about as monks in the family, telling the public that these sages are fond of sensual pleasures. As a result of that karma, those 500 monks were all falsely accused because of that woman Sundarika.6.The           Lord Buddha explained that in a past life we killed our half-brothers for wealth and threw them into a mountain crevice and covered them with a stone. As a result of that karma, Devadatta pushed a stone down and it hit our toes, causing them to bleed.           7. In a past life, when we were children playing on the main road, we saw a Pacceka Buddha and set fire to the road to trap them. As a result of that karma, in this last existence, Devadatta persuaded a skilled archer, who had killed many people, to kill us.

          8. In the past, I was an elephant trainer who drove an elephant to tie up the Supreme Paccekamani while he was out for alms. As a result of that karma, the ferocious elephant Nālagiri ran into the mountain pen in front of the Noble One.
          9. In the past, I was an infantryman, a commander, and killed many men with a spear. As a result of that remaining karma, now that fire has burned all of my feet, because my karma had not yet been destroyed.
          10. In the past, I was a boy of a fisherman in the village of Kevaṭṭakāma. When I saw people killing fish , I felt joyful. As a result of that karma, I experienced headaches when the Sakyans were oppressed and killed by King Viṭṭhu. This King Viṭṭhu was the very King Viṭṭhu who killed the Sakyans.
          11. I have reviled the disciples of the Buddha named Phussa , saying , “You should chew and eat only red rice. “Don’t eat wheat.” As a result of that action, I, invited by the brahmin, stayed in the city of Veranja and ate red rice for three months.
          12. While the wrestlers were at it, I harassed the wrestler’s son. As a result of that action, I experienced back pain.
          13. In the past, I was a physician and administered medicine to a rich man’s son to death. As a result of that action , I developed parasomnia. This disease befell my Buddha at the time when he was about to pass away.
          14. The Lord Buddha related that when I was a young man named Jotipala, I asked the Blessed One Kassapa at that time, “Where will there be Bodhi?” That Bodhi-realm is very difficult to attain. As a result of that action, I performed difficult deeds, namely, arduous actions, at Uruvela, in the Senanikom district, for six years. After that, I attained Bodhi-realm. However , I did not attain the highest Bodhi-realm by this path; I did not attain Bodhi- realm by these arduous actions. I was warned by my previous actions. Therefore, I sought enlightenment in the wrong way. Now I am free from sin and merit, free from all suffering, free from sorrow, free from distress, free from defilements, and attaining Nirvana.           All of this is the Buddha's past karma that he performed in the past, before he became the Buddha. This is only one meritorious act. The remaining 13 are all demeritorious acts.
