National University star Jaja Santiago courteously declined the lucrative offer of club team Bangkok Glass to play in the Thailand Volleyball League citing that she wants to finish her studies first and honor her previous commitments.

The 6-foot-5 versatile hitter was eyed by the Thai powerhouse club to join their squad as an import for the coming season, which will run from end of October to end of May.

But the schedule collides directly with Santiago’s stint with the Foton Tornadoes in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix and in the 80th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament opening early February.

The team is offering Santiago a six-month contract worth $4000 per month and an apartment for the duration of her stint.

Foton team manager Diane Santiago forwarded her sister’s official statement of Jaja’s decision.

“If I will think only about myself, definitely yes! I will grab the opportunity,” said Santiago, who received the offer from Somchai Donpraiyod of the Thailand Volleyball Association Thursday.

“It’s a big offer at the same time it’s a great opportunity for me as a Filipino athlete to represent our country in international leagues but, I have to prioritize things,” she added.

Santiago is expected to graduate this school year and will be in her fifth and last playing year for the Lady Bulldogs.

“First of all, I wanted to finish my studies and I am already expecting it this year,” she said. “This is the only gift I will have na kahit sinuman hindi makukuha sakin.”

“Second, I am a person that honor my commitments,” Santiago added. “Yes for sure, my school NU and my club team Foton will support me in every decisions na gagawin ko, but for me I made commitments ahead of time and I just can’t leave everyone hanging because of a sudden offer.”

“I hope everyone will understand.”

Bangkok Glass gave Santiago until Saturday morning to decide in time for the final submission of the team’s O-2 (final lineup).

Santiago could’ve been the second Pinay spiker to play in the Thai League after Alyssa Valdez suited up for 3BB Nakornnont last season.
