One Health Village: A Demonstration Site for Wicked Problem Solving

Purpose: One health village was established in order to set up the model of one health approach to solving the wicked problems in a community using multidisciplinary team and maintain it for the study site.

Materials and Methods: The information of community background, community map and timeline of Klang Pla Kod village, Kanchanaburi province, Thailand, were obtained mainly from the interview including a village leader, board of community, and villagers. The tentative problems were gained from the villagers. Then, the stakeholders who were relevant to the problems were invited for the workshop. The workshop encouraged stakeholders brainstorming and finding out the problem solutions. The participants included community leaders, Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary officers, elephant camp owner, representatives from Zoological Society of London, provincial waterworks authority officer, and academic sectors.

Results: We could initially identify and prioritize top three problems of the community which are composed of human–elephant conflict, water supply, and low income. The solution for human-elephant conflict was finalized to do elephant surveys and study their behaviors. Moreover, the international experts visited the village and wildlife sanctuary areas and gave the suggestions. The solution for water supply problem was finalized to develop and maintain water supply system of the community. The solution for low-income problem was finalized to support people in the community for alternative agriculture.

Conclusions: One health village was initiated as a demonstration site, where the human–elephant conflict is the highlight of the wicked problem that need the stakeholders to be discussed and solved the problem.
