The pre-season friendly in China between Manchester United and Manchester City has been called off because of adverse weather conditions.

The surface at the Birds Nest stadium in Beijing had been described as "bad" by United manager Jose Mourinho after heavy rain in recent weeks.

City boss Pep Guardiola had said his main hope for the fixture was for the players not to get injured.

United said "tournament organisers and clubs" decided to cancel the match.
