Brazil captain Fabiana starts Rio Olympic Torch Relay
Fabiana was the first runner on the Torch Relay
Lausanne, Switzerland, May 4, 2016 – Brazilian women’s volleyball team captain Fabiana had the honour on Tuesday of starting the Torch Relay for the 2016 Olympic Games.
“I do not have enough words to describe how much this experience moved me,” Fabiana said. “It is a mixture of happiness, honour and pride. Being the first person to carry the highest symbol of the Olympic Games will be an eternal memory in my heart.
"I am very excited, grateful and happy to have had this opportunity. To see the people cheering, excited, some even crying, greatly moved me. I have always been moved by great emotions. It was really an unforgettable day.”
Fabiana wasn’t the only volleyball representative to carry the Olympic torch on the opening day of the relay. Paula Pequeno received the flame from the hands of surfer Gabriel Medina and passed it on to marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima.
The flame will visit 300 cities in five regions of Brazil before reaching the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on 5 August, the opening day of the Olympic Games.
