Plastic surgery is becoming a part of mainstream world society. Nowadays, plastic surgery is popular in the world. There has been increase in the number of people. According to Statistics of plastic surgery in the world showed in 2014, 4.06 million people in the US had plastic surgery that more than any other country in the world. (The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2014) Japan ranked third with just over one million going under the knife. This paper examines the disadvantages, such as complications and costly and the advantages, such as confident with physical appearance and social life implication.
One of the most obvious disadvantages is the risk of complications. People with a sensitive body have high risk to infection from surgery. The plastic surgery has the some common of complications such as Hematoma, Nerve damage, Infection, Organ damage and so forth (Pletcher, 2015). The worst of these complications can affect until death.
Another disadvantage of plastic surgery is costly. The cost of each surgery has very expensive. People must spend lots of money for surgeon fees, hospital fees, medication costs and after care costs. For example, Cost of plastic surgery in USA, Nose Surgery $5000-6000, Eyelid Tuck (upper & lower) $4000-5500 and Breast Augmentation (silicone) $6000-8000 (Laftus Plastic Surgery Center, 2015). Cost of plastic surgery in Thailand, Nose Surgery 20000-25000฿, Eyelid Tuck (upper & lower) 36000฿ and Breast enlargement 95000-135000฿ (Yanhee Hospital, 2015).
However, there are also benefits of getting plastic surgery. One the positive side, people feel more confident with their physical appearance. People are getting a good appearance that beautiful more than before and therefore them getting plastic surgery in order to enhance self-confidence. This is the most obvious reason to having plastic surgery. And some people are getting plastic surgery because they want to keep themselves looking young. According to Prof. Dr. Jürgen Margraf investigated the psychological effects of plastic surgery on approximately 550 patients. Patients demonstrated more enjoyment of life, satisfaction and self-esteem after their physical appearance had been surgically altered. (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Margraf, 2013)
Another the positive side is social life implication. People who have good looking and charming, they will have better job employment opportunities such as superstar, fashion model, flight attendant and so forth. In many companies want person who has good ability and elegant physical appearance. Researcher Gundi Knies, of Essex University’s Institute for Social and Economic Research, said that attractive people were usually hired sooner and get promotions more quickly and earn up to four per cent more than their colleagues who are less attractive. For person who has unattractive appearance, plastic surgery is the fastest way to improve physical appearance, so people are interested in plastic surgery.
Therefore, I would tend to believe that plastic surgery has advantage more than disadvantage. Although it has some risk and costly but plastic surgery can change life of people to be better than before such as plastic surgery can change unattractive person to charming person and create opportunity to get a good jobs.
