My Post Facebook Story
Coming home for Thai New Year festival, Facebook has become a widespread and never-ending topic of 50-something including my mom. These fifties are so excited about chatting, calling via Facebook. Some tries to update their stories, sharing photos everywhere they go to their old-school friends and colleagues. However, I find that the best way to keep up with friends’ stories is to talk in-person. This is the reason why I left Facebook.
I must say that I hate Mark Zuckerberg. He might don’t want to change the world into this way but I hate how the thing he created has change how relationship works. I became a Facebook member since I was a high-schooler in 2009. After having my partial life online in the social network for 7 years, I gave up to the internet community by deactivating my Facebook account. I feel so great and I’m so proud of myself. I’m being like a vegan in a community that everyone eats meat. So of course, it’s a bit difficult at first. But, could I give up the Facebook community completely? No, I couldn’t. At the presence I have my private account joining groups that I need to keep up with. I have few friends but I unfollow them all. I have Facebook messenger to chat with some friends. Otherwise I go to talk with them directly and this makes the communication to be so effective and both people feel closer in a relationship.
So I’m a bit like a vegan who eats eggs and milk. It’s just like proteins from these food are so inevitable so I can’t desert them for my entire life. However, I’ve become a person who can concentrate a lot more on works. I have more time for my offline life. Currently I’m a science student who works as a language teacher as a part-time job. I’m a runner. I’m a host for foreign travelers. I enjoy surroundings a lot and I find that almost everyone is actually willing to smile back and talk with me (except for people who can’t leave checking their smartphones). I enjoy talking with strangers in random topics. I love to hang out with friends. I’ve got a notebook and written down my thoughts and stories I met. Once I meet friends, I talk a lot and my stories are never boring because they hear them for the first time, in contrast to telling stories I posted. I’ve become ever happy in the way that sliding through news feed and stalking some acquaintances never allow me to be.
For me, Facebook simply set your intimates to be at the same priority as acquaintances. Normally people don’t tell personal stories or deep feelings to those people. But then ‘Like’ system has got this through because it shows how many people appreciate your stories and basically everyone can feel good in this way. And this even drives the materialism, fashion trends, or anything that people do to get the ‘most’ likes. In my opinion, getting 1000 likes make me so proud but not as few compliments from intimates. I later realized that why I have to spend so much time for people whom I’m not close to. Although there is some important information floating around news feed, it may account for a few percent compared to anecdotes from other netizens. So I think that my time is more valuable than wasting for those guys.
Another reason why I gave up Facebook is that I don’t want people get to know me via sliding through my page. I agree that I used to update my every-day life but it shows just some aspects. I want people to know me when they really talk to me. You know it’s much easier to be a friend with someone by just walk in and talk in-person, rather than you add someone whom you want to be a friend, and then find yourself stalking and never be a friend in real life. Weather and looks are always popular starters when you want to talk with a person next-to-you. But in Facebook, you may find it hard to start a conversation. Asking “What’s your name?” is even awkward in the sense that you already know that person’s Facebook name.
Well, it’s just my opinion. And it is, of course, another anecdote again.
