CAT agrees deal with DTAC on bandwidth
CAT Telecom Plc has finally reached a formal agreement with mobile operator Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC) in a bid to resolve the frequency limits for the fourth-generation (4G) auctions.
The resolution will increase the amount of bandwidth on the 1800-megahertz spectrum for the auctions in November, Information and Communication Technology Minister Pornchai Rujiprapa said.
After years of negotiations, CAT agreed to allow DTAC to return its unused bandwidth of 5 MHz to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).
Initially, the NBTC planned to auction two slots of 12.5 MHz on the 1800-MHz spectrum.
The return of the unused 5 MHz will increase the total amount of bandwidth to 30 MHz, which can be split into two slots of 15 MHz to maximise the use of the frequency, Mr Pornchai said.
Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula yesterday said 4G auctions of the 1800- and 900-MHz frequencies would take place in November and December.
The government is also set to call a bid for another 4G spectrum after MCOT Plc and the Government Public Relations Department have returned unused 2600-MHz bandwidth to the regulator.
Sittichai Pokaiya-udom, a member of the national digital economy committee, said the committee chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha acknowledged the NBTC's planned 4G auctions, with no member opposing the details.
Yesterday's meeting officially gave the NBTC the green light to move ahead with its 4G auction processes after a one-year suspension, he said.
