Japanese pop star Miyavi, who plays a sadistic Japanese general in Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken," can speak perfect English, but can't understand anything his British co-star, Jack O'Connell, is saying.
According to Page Six, Miyavi uses a translator when doing press events with O'Connell, who "has a thick Derby accent in person, though he plays an American in the film."
Shooting "Unbroken" was difficult for Miyavi, who recently revealed he was so nervous about performing in front of Jolie that he "literally threw up" several times.
"But Angie knows how actors feel," Miyavi told Page Six. "She said,
'Just be yourself. Accept yourself.' I got back to the set . . . and I threw up again."
Jolie insists, however, that she "was more emotional than he was."
"I went in to take care of him and he was taking care of me," the 39-year-old Oscar winner recently told Vanity Fair. "It was an extremely moving experience, to watch someone watching their own life."
Jolie is currently directing (and starring alongside) husband Brad Pitt in "By the Sea," the filming of which is also difficult.
"The tricky thing is directing myself and directing Brad," Jolie said in an interview with Dujour Magazine. "It's hard, dramatic material, and we're balancing. It's a heavy film, and it's not easy for us. But even as you struggle through it, you're in the trenches together and you don't expect it to be easy. We're challenging each other and that's a really good thing."
Pitt had this to say about being directed by his wife: "I think my French is pretty good, so my writer/director put a lot of the language into the script and we'll see how I do," he told Vanity Fair. "My writer/director is tough as nails, as you know."
"Unbroken" hits theaters Christmas Day. "By the Sea" is scheduled to be released in late 2015.
