Marin Cilic’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals qualification bid on hold
as he defeated his Croatian countryman 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(2) today in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.
Karlovic struck 20 aces, to nine from
Cilic, as he edged victory in two hours and 16 minutes.
Both players won 97 of the 194 points. It was the pair’s third meeting and saw Karlovic
move to a 1-2 mark in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
US Open champion
Cilic is No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To London
and is bidding to qualify for the season finale for the first time.
Karlovic recorded his second Top 10 win of the season, having beaten
Tomas Berdych in Doha,
and goes on to face
Yen-Hsun Lu, who beat
Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 in just over two hours.
