Russia’s farmers are planting wheat, barley and rye this fall at a faster pace than last year because of dry conditions, said Andrey Sizov, managing director at market researcher SovEcon.
While the dryness allows sowing equipment to operate unimpeded by mud, it may limit yields next year to average levels, Sizov said by phone from Moscow. Russia’s state weather agency, Rosgidromettsentr Rossii, reported on Sept. 30 a shortage of rainfall in central parts of the country, with 25-50 percent less precipitation than normal in many areas. Rains last year had provided ample soil humidity, Sizov said.
Fields sown for the 2014-15 harvest season reached 11.4 million hectares (28.2 million acres), or 69 percent of the planned area by yesterday, the Russian Agriculture Ministry said on its website. That compared with 7.9 million hectares by the same date last year, when sowing was hampered by rains, and 12.2 million hectares in 2012, according to ministry data. The ministry targeted a winter crops planted area of 16.5 million hectares, up from last year’s 14.7 million hectares.
