1 เหตุฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงตักเตือนบรรดาผู้ใหญ่ในพวกท่านทั้งหลาย ในฐานะที่ข้าพเจ้าก็เป็นผู้ใหญ่คนหนึ่ง และเป็นพยานถึงความทุกข์ทรมานของพระคริสต์ และมีส่วนที่จะรับศักดิ์ศรีอันจะมาปรากฏภายหลัง
2 จงเลี้ยงฝูงแกะของพระเจ้าที่อยู่ในความดูแลของท่าน ไม่ใช่ด้วยความฝืนใจแต่ด้วยความเต็มใจ ไม่ใช่ด้วยการเห็นแก่ทรัพย์สิ่งของที่ได้มาโดยทุจริต แต่ด้วยใจเลื่อมใส
3 และไม่ใช่เหมือนเป็นเจ้านายที่ข่มขี่ผู้ที่อยู่ใต้อำนาจ แต่เป็นแบบอย่างแก่ฝูงแกะนั้น
4 และเมื่อพระผู้เลี้ยงผู้ยิ่งใหญ่จะเสด็จมาปรากฏ ท่านทั้งหลายจะรับศักดิ์ศรีเป็นมงกุฎที่ร่วงโรยไม่ได้เลย
5 ในทำนองเดียวกันท่านที่อ่อนอาวุโส ก็จงเชื่อฟังคำของพวกผู้ใหญ่ อันที่จริงให้ท่านทุกคนมีความถ่อมใจในการปฏิบัติต่อกันและกัน ด้วยว่าพระเจ้าทรงเป็นปฏิปักษ์กับคนเหล่านั้นที่ถือตัวจองหอง แต่พระองค์ทรงสำแดงพระคุณแก่คนที่อ่อนน้อมถ่อมตน
6 เหตุฉะนั้น ท่านทั้งหลายจงถ่อมใจลงภายใต้พระหัตถ์อันทรงฤทธิ์ของพระเจ้า เพื่อว่าพระองค์จะได้ทรงยกท่านขึ้นเมื่อถึงเวลาอันควร
7 จงละความกระวนกระวายของท่านไว้กับพระองค์ เพราะว่าพระองค์ทรงห่วงใยท่านทั้งหลาย
8 ท่านทั้งหลายจงสงบใจจงระวังระไวให้ดี ด้วยว่าศัตรูของท่านคือมารวนเวียนอยู่รอบๆ ดุจสิงห์คำรามเที่ยวไปเสาะหาคนที่มันจะกัดกินได้
9 จงต่อสู้กับศัตรูนั้นด้วยใจมั่นคงในความเชื่อ เพราะว่า พวกพี่น้องทั้งหลายของท่านทั่วโลก ก็ประสบความทุกข์ลำบากอย่างเดียวกัน

Shepherd the Flock of God
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
