EU set to roll back relations with Thailand over military coup

Brussels (Alliance News) - EU foreign ministers are poised to curtail diplomatic ties with Thailand, diplomats said Friday, one month after a coup that saw the military seize power.
"They will take a certain number of decisions just to show our frustration with what's going on there," a senior EU official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The measures will include suspending official visits to and from Thailand, and delaying the signature of a partnership and cooperation agreement that has been under negotiation, diplomats said.
EU countries are also expected to review their cooperation with Thailand, "among other things in the military field," according to the official.
The punitive measures will remain in place "as long as the present authorities do not restore the democratic process," he said, noting that the EU would like the situation to be "brought back to normal."
The ministers will urge the military leadership to "restore, as a matter of urgency, the legitimate democratic process and the constitution, through credible and inclusive elections," according to a draft statement seen by dpa.
"It cannot be business as usual in the EU's relationship with Thailand," a diplomat said. " (Ministers) will signal that there's more to come if developments in Thailand go in the wrong direction."
