Cherry Blossom Forecast 2014
As of January 22, 2014

The weather service otenki.jp published a very early first cherry blossom forecast on January 22. In their forecast, otenki.jp predicts the blossoms to generally open according to their average schedule in western Japan and a few days later than average in eastern and northern Japan. The predictions are based on long-term forecasts that see February colder than average across Japan, while March is expected to be average in western Japan but colder than usual in the rest of the country.

Below are the forecast dates of cherry trees opening their blossoms this year according to otenki.jp and the estimated best viewing periods (estimated by japan-guide.com based on the aforementioned forecasts).

Be warned that such early forecasts have been rather inaccurate in past years. It is not usually until early March that the accuracy of cherry blossom forecasts increases to a more reliable level.

Location     Opening     Estimated Best Viewing
Tokyo     March 30     April 6 to 15
Kyoto     March 29     April 4 to 13
Fukuoka     March 26     April 2 to 10
Osaka     March 27     April 2 to 10
Nagoya     April 1     April 8 to 16
Sendai     April 16     April 21 to 29
