Foreign visitors pass 1 million threshold for first time in July

The Japan National Tourism Organization said Aug. 21 that 1,003,100 foreign tourists and business people visited Japan in July, up 18.4 percent from last year. The previous monthly record, 923,000, was marked in April.
A JNTO official attributed the increase partly to the yen’s weakness against other currencies, which gave visitors a sense that Japan, often viewed as a pricey destination, is economical.
An increase in flights by low-cost carriers and the government’s decision to ease visa requirements for tourists from Southeast Asian countries also helped, the JNTO official added.
By country and region, South Korea led the charge with 244,000 visitors, up 28.6 percent from July last year, followed by Taiwan with 238,500, up 48.7 percent.
In contrast, the number of visitors from China fell 31.5 percent to 140,000. Visits by Chinese have been dropping off because of strained relations over sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.
Arrivals from Southeast Asian nations were up sharply.

Visitors from Hong Kong increased 65.7 percent to 85,300, while those from Singapore rose 33.5 percent to 11,200. Visitors from Malaysia rose 25.2 percent to 9,900.
