Rice is not just the main diet of many of the 600 million Southeast Asians but throughout the world. In some countries, the importance of rice production determines their national economical progress and the "rice bowl" of the working class.
...It is only recent that politics and rice goes into the same bowl in Thailand. Recent events have triggered character assassination attempts in discrediting the people responsible for the national rice pledging scheme.
The latest of which led a politically-motivated group to accuse the Government of selling contaminated rice to the public. In response to the rumors and spread of fears in the social media, the Public Health Ministry tested with stringent standard operating procedure, and supported by the Thai Rice Packers Association, concluded that packed rice in the market are safe for consumption.
Nattawut Saikua, a Member of Parliament had sought the Ministry of Commerce to conduct an accountable investigation in the Krabi Province that ultimately revealed that the alleged contaminated rice was actually produced on 29 March 2011, during which Abhisit Vejjajiva was the Prime Minister. Abhisit is now the Opposition Leader.
The previous Government led by the Democrat Party had in fact failed in quality control as there was an absence of any rice scheme policies.
Accusations and political spins that aim at ruining the trusts between the public and the present Government have been increasing. It is a fact that the actions of the few are slowly destroying the nation's reputation and the farmers that depend on the rice pledging scheme for their livelihood.
