CP All Pcl, the world’s third- biggest operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores, is preparing a takeover offer for Thai retailer Siam Makro Pcl (MAKRO), said people with knowledge of the matter.
A deal may be announced as soon as this week, two people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. Siam Makro, with market value of 163.7 billion baht ($5.7 billion), was suspended from trading today, after the company said it is “in the process of disclosing significant information,” according to a regulatory filing.
SHV Holdings NV, Siam Makro’s parent, earlier this month denied a report in Thai newspaper Prachachat that the company had hired financial advisers to sell its entire stake in the retailer. SHV held about 64 percent of Siam Makro as of March 2012 through a unit and an affiliate, according to data on the Thai company’s website.
Officials at CP All (CPALL), Siam Makro and SHV Holding could not immediately be reached to comment on a possible deal.
Siam Makro shares have surged 30 percent in the past six trading sessions. CP All fell as much as 4.9 percent today, poised for its lowest close since Dec. 14.
SHV, a closely held Dutch energy company, hired advisers and aims to complete the sale of its holding in Bangkok-based Siam Makro by the end of this year, the Thai-language Prachachat reported on its website on April 1, without saying where it obtained the information. Several retailers in Thailand are interested in buying Siam Makro, the report said.
