Manchester United have joined the chase for Atletico Madrid superstar Radamel Falcao - and might have already paid their deposit, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

The Colombian striker has been the subject of intense speculation for the majority of the season having starred in the Spanish capital since his move from Porto in the summer of 2011.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been suggested as the two most likely destinations for the striker, but it has now emerged that Premier League champions-elect United are also in the running for his signature.

And Marca even claim that sources close to United and Atletico have hinted that a small fee has already been paid to the Spanish club as a guarantee for a future transfer.

The report also draws comparisons to the deal which took David De Gea to United in 2011, suggesting that that transfer was completed months before the goalkeeper officially signed in the summer.

United are not expected to match Falcao’s £50m buyout clause but will instead pay a fee in the region of £43m to take him to Old Trafford.
